1986 World Cup
Final
Argentina beat Belgium in the
semi-final, with Maradona scoring another wonder goal.
In the other semi-final West Germany beat a tired France –
a repeat of the result at the same stage in 1982.
Argentina and West
Germany
In the Final, Argentina seemed to be
heading for an easy victory. Valdano added a second to
Brown’s first half goal in the 55th minute but in the
74th minute Karl-Heinz Rummenigge pulled a goal back.
Six minutes later Voller equalised and the game seemed to
be heading for extra time. Then in the 83rd Burruchaga
scored the winning goal. -
For Argentina it was a sweet victory. They had won the
tournament away from home and Maradona was voted ‘Player of
the Tournament. The only cloud over their victory was that
‘hand of God’ goal but that did not concern millions
celebrating on the streets of every town, village and city
in the country.
