The World Cup Story the first sixty years

Brazil unhappy

Brazil were in a group with Austria, Sweden and Spain. In their first match against Sweden there was a very strange decision by Welsh referee Clive Thomas. At the end of the first half he gave Brazil a corner.

They took it and Zico scored - but the referee did not allow the goal. He had blown his whistle while the ball was travelling from the corner flag to the penalty area. Mr Thomas did referee another World Cup match.

Argentina reach final

The Brazilians were even unhappier about what happened in the second stage. After a violent 0-0 draw with their neighbours, Argentina, everything depended on the last round of group games. Because Brazil played their game first, Argentina knew that they needed to beat Peru by more than four goals

In the first few minutes Peru hit the post, but Argentina played seven forwards and attacked for the rest of the game. They won 6-0, with Mario Kempes scoring two goals.
