The World Cup Story the first sixty years

1982: fastest World Cup goal

Bryan Robson scored after 27 seconds. This is still the fastest goal ever scored in a World Cup match.

Northern Ireland were also in the competition for the first time since 1958. They had the youngest player in the competition and one of the oldest.

More records

Manchester United’s Norman Whitside was only 17, while goalkeeper Pat Jennings played his first game for Northern Ireland 1964 in Belfast. Jennings is the record holder for the most international appearances.

He retired from football in 1985 but returned to play in the 1986 World Cup. This mean that he played in six different World Cups and two final stages.
