1958

The 1958 World Cup was held in Sweden. It introduced the world to a 17 year-old football genius from Brazil. His name was Edson Nasciemento but everyone called him Pelé.

At that time Pelé was the youngest player to appear in the World Cup.

Pelé did not play in Brazil’s first two games. His first World Cup appearance was in a 2-0 win against the USSR. He scored his first World Cup goal in a 1-0 quarter final win against Wales.

Champions

In the semi-final against France, Brazil won 5-2. Pelé scored a hat trick. In the final against Sweden, Pelé scored twice more as Brazil won 5-2. For his second goal he chipped the ball over a defender and volleyed it into the net.

Brazil probably deserved to win the World Cup in 1930 and 1950. Now they were champions for the first time. And Pelé had the first of three World Cup winner medals.
