Semi Finals



In the semi-finals the home nation Italy faced holders Argentina in Naples. Maradona received a hero's reception by local Napoli fans but the match was another great disappointment. It ended 1-1 after extra time. Argentina again won on penalties.

The other semi-final was between old rivals England and West Germany. Though it also ended 1-1, but it did not disappoint. Both teams attacked for 120 minutes in the best match of the competition..

Germany scored first but again Gary Lineker rescued England with an 80th minute equaliser. Both teams played attacking football and had chances to win in extra time.

Gascoigne's Tears

The best young player of the tournament Paul Gascoigne created more drama when he was booked for a late challenge. The booking meant that he would miss the final and the world’s television cameras captured his tears.

In the end the booking did not matter. West Germany won on penalties and went into their third successive final.
