The World Cup Story the first sixty years

The Quarter Finals

Three of the quarter finals were very poor. Argentina and Yugoslavia drew 0-0 - and both teams had problems scoring in the penalty shoot-out! Even Diego Maradona missed one before his team finally won 3-2.

Italy beat Ireland 1-0 while a first half penalty was enough to give West Germany victory against Czechoslovakia.

England v Cameroon

The only real excitement came in the game between England and Cameroon. The African team continued their strong form. England took the lead but Cameroon scored two quick goals. They came within ten minutes of knocking England out of the competition.

Cameroon's poor defending cost them the game. They gave away two penalties came and Lineker scored them both. England were fortunate to win 3-2 after extra time.
