The World Cup Story the first sixty years

A terrible final

Argentina lost the first game of the World Cup. Now they are in the final. They have got their through a combination of defence, penalties and the genius of Diego Maradona. Will this be enough to win them the trophy?

Germany, do not play pretty football but they do have good players. Their football is efficient and effective. And they are even better than Argentina at taking penalties.

Italia 90 started with dreams of a classic competion. But with the home team out the atmosphere is now a little flat. And the final between Germany and Argentina is truly terrible. A billion people watch one of the worst games in the history of the World Cup.

Argentina defend a foul. Germany struggle to break down their defence. There are an endless series of small and big fouls. Players from both teams dive all over the pitch.

The referee sends off Argentina's Pedro Monzon. This is the first time a player is sent off in a World Cup Final. His team-mate Dezotti becomes the second player soon after.

Still Argentina fight on. Is the whole tournament going to be decided on penalties?

Yes - but not after extra time. Germany get a very controversial penalty in the 85th minute. They score and win.

Germany deserve to win a very poor competition. The most memorable image of the final is of the Argentina players surrounding the referee.
