In 1953 Hungary came to Wembley and beat England 6-2. This introduced the world to a new attacking style of football and to a brilliant player named Puskas. Puskas had a superb left foot - 'I never needed the right one,' he said-

Hungary started the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland as favourites. They beat West Germany in a First Round game and looked the strongest team in the competition. When they reached the Final they again faced West Germany.

Hungary Favourites


Everyone expected Hungary to win easily. They were not the first team to discover that German teams are always difficult to beat.

The Final started well for Hungary. In the sixth minute the great Puskas scored. Two minutes later they added a second goal. At 2-0 the game seemed to be over, but Germany fought back to 2-2.

In the 84th minute, Rahn gave Germany the lead (
