In the first half of extra time Belgium finally take
the lead. They then score what looks like a winning
third goal. A minute later Igor Belanov keeps the tie
alive by completing his hat-trick. But Belgium hold on
to win through to the quarter finals.
Another extraordinary game in this round is Spain’s 5-1
victory over Denmark. Denmark enter the tournament with
a reputation for exciting football. They win their
group, defeating West Germany.
The first half is close. Denmark take the lead through
a penalty. Butragueno equalises just before the break.
But in the second half Spain dominate. The Real Madrid
pair of Michel and four-goal hero Emilio Butragueno
reveal the weakness in the Danish defence.
