The 1986 World Cup nearly almost did not take place.

It was originally scheduled to take place in Colombia but financial problems forced the Colombians to pull out. Mexico agreed to hold the tournament only to suffer a terrible earthquake in September 1985.

Some of stadiums were damaged but the World Cup survived.
