Semi-Finals
In the first semi final Italy beat Poland 2-0. The other
semi-final was a classic game between France and West
Germany.
West Germany scored first but the French star Platini
equalised with a penalty. In extra-time France took a
two-goal lead. They looked certain to win.
Battiston
hurt
Then came a terrible foul by
the German goalkeeper Schumacher on the French forward
Battiston. Battiston was seriously injured, but Schumacher
was not sent off.
The Germans then brought on their captain Rummenigge as
substitute. Rummenigge was only half-fit, but the other
players immediately played better. Rumenigge then scored
and Fischer got the equaliser.
In the penalty-shoot out Schumacher saved a penalty. The
French were very angry but West Germany were in the
final.
